The temporary exhibition is based on an unprecedented collection.
A significant part of the natural history collection of the Balaton Museum is the collection of bird eggs, which contains the eggs of 111 species. The majority of the collection was collected by ornithologist Dr. Sándor Lovassy at the end of the 19th century, and some of the sets of eggs are older than the museum itself. The fact that this collection is 100-135 years old is of exceptional scientific value.
The collection of 111 sets of bird eggs is the core of the temporary exhibition “Telling a bird by its egg”. Curator Péter Németh, a conservation engineer, designed the exhibition, which covers almost 200 m2, so that the more than 470 bird eggs are arranged according to the species’ typical habitats. These four habitats are displayed on around 40 m2, the giant diorama also features preparations, photographs of species corresponding to their habitats as well as nests of several species.
The exhibition presents the most important information on 28 giant panels, illustrated with colourful pictures. The aim was to include all the information you need to or should know about birds.
The exhibition is available in English and German apart from Hungarian. In addition, a child-friendly approach has been given a significant role and a museum-educational space of more than 30 m2 has been created, where it is possible to take a closer look at nests, bird feathers, solve playful tasks not only during the museum-educational sessions, but visitors can do so at any time.
At the digital point in the exhibition you can listen to the sounds of the birds on display, view enlarged photos of the eggs and even find out a few other important facts.
